Visibility platform D&D alerts vs ATAHSKIA
Container visibility platforms track ocean, rail and dray moves and alert you before the last free day, when a hold appears or when an empty is due back. Used well, those alerts prevent charges in the first place, which is always cheaper than disputing them.
But some charges arrive anyway: the terminal had no appointments, the hold lifted late, the carrier billed days it should not have. Prevention and recovery are different jobs. This page compares relying on visibility alerts alone with adding a Part 541 audit and dispute layer on top of the same data.
| Dimension | Visibility platform alerts | ATAHSKIA |
|---|---|---|
| Audit depth | ||
| Primary job | Predict and prevent D&D through alerts and planning. | Audit invoices that arrive and recover charges that are not owed. |
| Invoice checks | Generally not in scope; some platforms estimate expected charges. | All 20 § 541.6 elements and the § 541.7 issuance rule on every invoice. |
| Billed days test | Shows when a container went past free time. | Compares each specific date charged against the container timeline and the free time stated on the invoice. |
| Evidence | ||
| Milestone data | Strong: carrier, terminal, vessel and rail events in one view. | Consumes the same events, often from your visibility platform, and adds appointment and dispatch records. |
| Point-in-time history | Current status, with event history depending on the platform. | Every status change snapshotted for use as evidence, including LFD as published. |
| Disputes | ||
| Dispute packets | Not usually generated. | Relief requests citing CFR subsections with evidence attached, inside the § 541.8 window. |
| Carrier deadline tracking | Not in scope. | Tracks the billing party's 30-day resolution deadline and escalation. |
| Charge complaints | Not in scope. | § 41310 dossiers compiled for the billed party to submit to the FMC. |
| Operations | ||
| Users | Planners, dispatchers, customer service. | D&D analysts, AP, finance and trade counsel. |
| Integration | Feeds TMS, ERP and dashboards. | Connects to your visibility platform as a data source rather than replacing it. |
| Commercials | ||
| Pricing model | Typically subscription by tracked volume. | Platform fee plus success fee, or flat fee on High-Volume Fleet. |
| Measured outcome | Charges avoided. | Charges disputed and recovered, reported by carrier and month. |
Prevention does not cover the invoice
An alert two days before the LFD helps only if a truck and an appointment are available. When they are not, the charge accrues no matter how good the alert was. And a perfectly avoidable charge can still arrive on an invoice that omits required elements or issued too late to be owed.
Visibility platforms are not designed to read invoices or apply Part 541. That is the gap ATAHSKIA fills.
Your visibility data becomes evidence
If you already pay for container tracking, ATAHSKIA can consume those events through the platform's API. Discharge, availability, outgate and empty return become the independent clock each invoice is tested against.
We store every change with a time stamp, because a dispute needs what was shown at the time, not what the portal shows today.
Measuring both
Teams that run both measure two numbers: D&D avoided through planning and D&D recovered through disputes. Carrier scorecards then show which carriers and terminals produce the most avoidable and the most disputable charges, which feeds contract and routing decisions.
When visibility platform alerts is enough
If your containers almost always move inside free time, the D&D you do incur is small, and invoices you receive are consistently complete and timely, visibility alerts on their own may be all you need. Prevention is the better first investment for teams with high dwell and no planning discipline.
FAQ
Does ATAHSKIA replace our visibility platform?
No. We connect to it as a data source. Planning and alerts stay where they are.
We do not have a visibility platform. Can we still use ATAHSKIA?
Yes. We use carrier EDI, terminal data, tracking APIs and your own records to build container timelines.
Can visibility data alone win a dispute?
It helps, but most disputes rest on the invoice's Part 541 elements plus milestone and appointment evidence together.
